The People and Culture.

Spending the summer in Asia was a transformative experience that taught me the importance of building connections, fostering empathy, and learning about different cultures. Whether it was through work, traveling, staying with local hosts, or sharing long car rides, I was able to immerse myself in the cultures of each country I visited everyday.

Through everyday experiences like shopping in bustling local markets, cooking traditional meals, navigating public transit, and picking up bits of local languages, I learned to communicate and connect with people even when we didn’t share a common language. These moments taught me to approach situations with patience, creativity, and understanding, further deepening my appreciation for the diverse perspectives I encountered.

These experiences not only enriched my cultural awareness but also strengthened my ability to approach challenges with empathy and adaptability—values that I will carry with me throughout my life and career.

Key Takeaways

  • Relationships are foundational in this industry
The importance of positive relationships cannot be emphasized enough! Favors and collaboration often stem from the connections you make, making it essential to approach every interaction with kindness and respect.

  • Listening to other perspectives & teamwork
I asked almost everyone I worked with, “As a developer on the brand side, what can I do to make your life easier?” This is one response that stood out to me, but several others mentioned this as well:

“We are a team. Without you, we wouldn’t be here, and without us, your products wouldn’t exist. Together, we need to solve the problems we encounter as a team rather than always placing the blame on the manufacturer.”

This reinforced the importance of approaching challenges with teamwork and mutual respect.

  • Empathy is a superpower
Recognizing that everyone is human and approaching situations with kindness and respect is essential. This summer deepened my understanding of empathy, which I see as one of the most valuable traits in both my personal and professional life, especially as a developer constantly working within diverse cultural teams.

  • Effective communication in multicultural teams
Different cultures have different approaches to communication and work styles. Some are quieter and more reserved, others work at a slower pace, and some place a higher emphasis on respect and hierarchy. Additionally, not all cultures prioritize equality to the same extent as the U.S., which requires adaptability and understanding. Learning about these differences in advance helped me navigate situations with greater sensitivity and effectiveness.
